Zoe Saldana (b. Zoe Yadira Zaldaña Nazario on June 19, 1978, New Jersey) is an American actor born to immigrants from the Dominican Republic and raised in Queens, New York, for several years before moving to the Dominican Republic with her parents for seven years. While living there she studied ballet and other dance forms at the ECOS Espacio de Danza Dance Academy. Saldana moved back to the states at 17 with her family where she began exploring theater with the Faces Theater Troupe and the New York Theater.
She impressed a talent scout with her performance and her dance experience helped her land the role of Eva Rodriguez in the ballet drama Center Stage. The film helped launch a career that includes the panned Crossroads alongside Britney Spears, Drumline with Nick Cannon in which she showed off her dance skills and the blockbuster hit Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl as pirate, Anamaria. Other roles include an appearance in the Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta Jones romance, The Terminal, the 2005 remake of Guess Who?'s Coming to Dinner, simply titled Guess Who, and The Skeptic.
Saldana has been tapped to take on the role of Lt. Nyota Uhura previously played by Nichelle Nichols in the upcoming Star Trek film. She will also appear in Avatar slated for a 2009 release.
