Fanzine

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

(Redirected from Zine)

A fanzine (or zine) is a term in fandom to describe a periodical published by amateurs. Fanzines are usually put together and distributed usually by a single fan or a small group of fen.

In addition, there are semi-prozines which are what happens when a fanzine starts attracting commercial advertisers and professional writers as contributors and may hire a part-time paid staff.

The Comet published in 1930 by the Science Correspondence Club in Chicago is generally considered to be the first science fiction fanzine. Fan Russ Chauvenet coined the term "fanzine" in 1940, and it quickly replaced the earlier terms "fanmags" or "letterzines."

"Fanzines" are differentiated from prozines (professional magazines). The term semiprozine was coined to describe fanzines that pay contributors a nominal fee for their work, or that are primarily sold rather than traded; this "neither fish nor fowl" awards category was created to prevent Locus from achieving a perpetual lock on the Best Fanzine Hugo.
