Yaphet Kotto (b. November 15, 1937, New York City, New York) is an American actor well remembered for his his role in the movie Alien. Kotto is the son of Cameroonian prince Njoki Manga Bell Abraham and Gladys Marie Kotto, both African Jews. Kotto began taking acting lessons at 16 and made his stage debut three years later as Othello. He made his Broadway debut alongside Ossie Davis and Louis Gossett, Jr. and The Zulu and the Zayda. Though opportunities came for movie roles, he turned them down, unsatisfied with the roles of black actors in films.
He finally made his film debut in 1964 in Nothing But a Man. He won over critics with his performance in The Liberation of L. B. Jones and became well known as complaining worker, Parker alongside Sigourney Weaver in Alien. Kotto took a turn as a villain, playing 'Mr. Big' in the James Bond movie Live and Let Die. Kotto is known for authoritative roles. He played a drill sergeant in the 1983 series For Love and Honor, Lt. Al Giradello in the series Homicide: Life on the Street and other official roles in various guest appearances.
