History

The team was founded by Professor Charles Xavier and trained to defend humans and mutants from the great powers mutants have developed.

Charles Xavier (also known as Professor X ) was a mutant himself, referred to as the "most powerful mutant mind on earth". It became evident to him early on that humans would fear mutants, once they became known to them. His friend, Eric Magnus, also a powerful mutant, believed that humanity would inevitably try to destroy all mutants, and believed that the only way they could survive was to become masters of humanity. Xavier saw things differently. He had a dream that mutants and humans could co-exist peacefully. To see his dream reach fruition, Xavier started a school called Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters located in Westchester New York. The school would outwardly seem to be an ordinary prep school. The students recruited would all be mutants, and would get a traditional education, while also being trained to use their powers effectively and safely for the good of humanity. His primary team of students were referred to as the X-Men, trained to use their powers to protect humanity from mutants that are evil or out of control, and to promote peace between mutants and humans. In the meantime, Eric Magnus, in the identity of Magneto, was forming a group called The Brotherhood, sometimes referred to as The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. This team would further Magneto's agenda that would have mutants in control of human society. Of course, the two groups were destined to clash.

The original X-Men, created in the 1963, included Cyclops(Scott Summers), Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), The Beast (Hank McCoy), Iceman (Bobby Drake) and The Angel (Warren Worthington III).

In 1975, a new group of X-Men were formed. This team was originally brought together by Xavier to battle the living island Krakoa and rescue the members of the original team. This new team included Cyclops and Jean Grey, as well as new members Storm (Ororo Munroe), Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner), Wolverine (Logan), Banshee (Sean Cassidy), Sunfire (Shiro Yoshido), Colossus (Peter Rasputin), and Thunderbird (John Proudstar), who was doomed to die early on. Thunderbird would die early in battle, and Sunfire would soon leave the group. Soon Shadowcat (Kitty Pride) and Rogue were added. The original X-Men would guest-star and work with the team in different adventures. The New X-Men, as the re-launched comic book was called, was written by Len Wein and drawn by Dave Cockrum. It was when Chris Claremont, and artist John Byrne took over the book, that something really clicked. This group of X-Men became a phenomenom in comics, achieving record sales, and giving birth to many spin-offs and different X-Men characters and groups. The success culminated in the hit movie trilogy beginning in 2000 which set a new standard for comic book based movies.
