The X-Files is an award-winning television series that aired nine seasons on FOX. The series is currently in syndication and airs on The Sci Fi Channel.
The breakout 1993 sci-fi series wove together the disparate threads of UFOs, paranormal activity, forensic investigation, conspiracy, and sexual tension into a compelling TV series and was a hit for Fox. Over it's several seasons, the series earned three Golden Globe awards for Best TV Drama.
David Duchovny starred as FBI Agent Fox Mulder, the lead investigator for the FBI's X-Files Division, which handles cases involving inexplicable, "paranormal" phenomena.
His partner, Special Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), is a licensed medical doctor and accomplished scientist who received special forensic and investigative training at the FBI Academy.
Over the course of their years-long partnership and deep friendship, the two clash repeatedly, as Mulder's forceful belief in the supernatural meets the immovable object of Scully's skeptical, and highly knowledgeable, mind. The show developed its own mythology as their investigations began to reveal an underlying global conspiracy, or perhaps more than one.
Developed by Chris Carter, who went on to spawn other science fiction TV series, including Millennium, Harsh Realm, and The Lone Gunmen (the latter being a spin-off of The X-Files), the show kept its viewers on the edge of their seats for a remarkable nine seasons and spawned a film, The X-Files (movie) in the middle of its run. In latter seasons, the cast evolved to include lead roles for Annabeth Gish and Robert Patrick, with reduced participation from Anderson and Duchovny. A second film has been in the works for several years and a script has been produced by Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz and may make it to the screen.
