A working title is a device used by an author, director or production company to give a fake "code name" for a work in progress.
This may be to disguise a strongly-anticipated movie (to discourage leaks of information and minimize pre-release involvement by fans and journalists) or it may be simply because a final title has not yet been chosen.
Television
In the early 2000s, the BBC's 2004 remake of Doctor Who was given the working title of "Torchwood," an anagram for "Doctor Who" while the series' first year of production was being shot.
Sometimes, a working title becomes permanent. This happened when current Doctor Who re-creator, Russell T. Davies liked the working title so much, he created a fictional Torchwood Institute in the Who series and used the name for a spin-off series.
Film
Working titles also are given to as-yet-unnamed and unfinished planned works of long-standing series. For instance as of 2006, the 22nd official James Bond film was in pre-production under the working title, "Bond 22."
