Wolverine is a fictional comic book superhero appearing in Marvel Comics. Wolverine is a mutant with extraordinary powers and a complex and colorful history. He is most famous for being a member of the popular super-hero team, the X-Men. He is currently also a member of the New Avengers.
Character Origin
Wolverine begins his life somewhere in Canada in the late 1880s as James Howlett, a sickly child with life crushing allergies. Upon seeing his father murdered by a disgruntled grounds keeper, his mutant powers are activated by the trauma. He has long claws made of bone which can pop out of the top of his hands, and then retract at will back into his forearms. These bones are part of his skeletal structure. He also has a quick healing factor, so his hands heal up quickly when the claws are retracted. This healing factor also gives him an extended life span, which is why he still seems a man in his prime though he is easily more than 120 years old. He has enhanced hearing and sense of smell.
After being rejected by his mother because of his strange abilities, James flees his home to British Columbia with his childhood friend Rose. The two live under assumed names, James taking the name Logan. A few years later, Logan and Rose are found by the grounds keeper’s son, and Logan and he fight. During the fight, Rose is accidentally struck by Logan’s claws, and is killed. Logan runs off, consumed by guilt and grief, to live an isolated existence in the Canadian back country.
Years pass. Sometime after World War II, he is located and taken by something called the Weapon X program. This program consists of a group of Canadian scientists attempting to perfect a technique that would bond the indestructible metal, adamantium, to a living person’s skeleton. With his mutant healing powers, Logan seems the ideal for the experiment. At the time of the experiment, the scientists don’t know about his claws, and are surprised at the extra metal needed to encase his entire skeleton. With the indestructable metal around his bones and claws, Logan is deadlier than ever. Now his bones and claws are unbreakable, and can cut through anything. In order to make him the perfect weapon, the scientist also take steps to manipulate his memory. They block much of his real memory, and implant false memories into him. For this reason, Logan can't remember much of who he was before the program got hold of him. What memories he does have, he doesn’t trust. This is why most of his past is still shrouded in mystery, even to him.

Logan is indoctrinated into Department H, a Canadian secret military organization. It is at this time that we first meet him, as an agent of Department H, during his encounter with the Incredible Hulk. After that incident, Logan is placed into Alpha Flight, Canada’s government sponsored super-team. From there he is recruited by Professor X (Charles Xavier) to join the X-Men. Logan decides to join the Professor, and severs his association with Department H once and for all. Logan has been an X-Man ever since.

Wolverine Portrayals
What actor "is" Wolverine? Well, that depends on how you measure it. Certainly, Hugh Jackman is the best known in the role, having starred in the movie blockbusters. However, voice artist Scott McNeil made many more appearances as Wolverine, having played the character in almost 40 episodes of X-Men: The Evolution. Cathal J. Dodd may be the winner. As one of the voices of the Capcom games, as well as doing 65 episodes of the 1992 animated series, has had both the longest run (from 1992 through at least 2005) and been in the most different productions and the most episodes.
