William Edward Fichtner (born November 27, 1956, in Long Island, New York) is a talented actor who began his career on the soap opera As the World Turns in 1987. He has had roles in several popular films, such as Malcolm X, Contact, and Armageddon. Fichtner grew up in a military family and following his graduation from high school, he attended SUNY Brockport where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice. He then moved to New York City to focus on acting. After his debut on As the World Turns he landed small roles in Malcolm X, and Quiz Show. He landed his first notable role in Steven Soderbergh's The Underneath.
Fichtner landed a recurring role on the sitcom Grace Under Fire and In 1995, appeared in Virtuosity with Denzel Washington, Reckless with Mia Farrow and Strange Days with Ralph Fiennes and Angela Basset. He earned critical notice for his appearance in Kevin Spacey's directorial debut Albino Alligator and followed up with Contact which starred Jodi Foster. He turned to comedy in 1999 with the unusual thriller, Go and in 2000 starred opposite Demi Moore in Passion of the Mind. His turn in the award-winning The Perfect Storm increased his profile and he followed up with roles in Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, the scifi thriller Equilibrium and the Academy Award-winning Crash. Other notable films include Ultraviolet with Milla Jovovich, a starring role as Sheriff Tom Underlay in the short-lived ABC series, Invasion, Blades of Glory, and the hit series Prison Break.
In 2008, Fichtner will appear in The Dark Knight.
