At twelve, West was abducted and taken to a facility in Odessa, Texas where he was tagged with a radioactive marker that left two small notches on his neck. He remembers little of the experience except for a man with horn-rimmed glasses. He was returned home and later developed the ability to fly. He learned his ability was explained by the book Activating Evolution by Dr. Chandra Suresh.
He immediately recognized something different about new transfer student Claire Bennet when she arrived in Costa Verde. The two shared a biology class together and he pushed her to share with him what made her different. Past experiences (and her father's instructions) made Claire reluctant but she eventually revealed her ability to regenerate from any wound. The two struck up a relationship and West helped Claire win a spot on the cheerleading team by playing a prank on team leader Debbie.
When West discovered Claire's father was the man who kidnapped him years before, he became convinced Claire was part of a plot against him. Her father convinced him otherwise when West threatened to drop him from a high point. West later helped Claire's father get Claire back from kidnappers with whom he used to work. West managed to stop Noah from killing Mohinder Suresh.
After Noah's death, West managed to talk Claire out of calling on The Haitian to wipe her memories of her father and all the related pain. He wasn't able to convince her not to go through with her plot to reveal their existence to the general public.
