Waterworld is 1995 action adventure film directed by Kevin Reynolds and written by Peter Rader and David Twohy. Kevin Costner starred in the high seas adventure set in a dystopian future in which the polar ice caps have melted leaving almost no dry land behind. Costner plays a mutant, Mariner, with webbed feet and a set of gills who unwillingly finds himself sheltering a woman, Helen, and an orphaned girl, Enola, with a mysterious map tattooed on her back that may lead to dry land. Because of the map, the two are being hunted by a band of evil pirates. The film's production costs ballooned beyond it's initial budget. At the time, it was the most expensive film made at over $175 million. Despite the expense, the film failed to recoup its budget domestically.
