The Watcher, and the race of Watchers, are fictional comic book characters owned by Marvel Comics. The Watcher is best known as a supporting character in the Fantastic Four comic book series.
The Watcher resides on the moon, where he stands and observes Earth and other sectors of the Milky Way galaxy. As his name implies, his task is to watch and record all things, significant and insignificant, that occur in our sector of space, including those in alternate dimensions. The blue area of the moon, where he resides, is a settlement that supports oxygen that was built eons ago by an alien race called the Kree.
He himself is part of an alien race that once sought to use their near limitless knowledge and ability to help a race called the Procilicus. The Watchers tutored the young race in the science of atomic power. The Watchers were surprised to learn some time later, that the race later destroyed itself in an atomic war. They have pledged to never again to interfere with the course of the universe, even if an entire race lay dying at their feet. Acutely motivated by the pursuit of knowledge, they now limit themselves to observation only, at least in theory. Various member of the Watcher race are scattered through the universe, pursuing endless knowledge of the course of sentient events. Our “local” Watcher (referred to often as "The Watcher") is named Uatu.
The Watcher has vast mental, physical, and energy manipulating powers. He can convert their bodies to energy to teleport at hyper light speeds, reach into the mind of every known form of sentient life, manipulate the electromagnetic spectrum, and observe life in alternate realities. He is immensely strong and durable and seemingly immortal. He can create illusions with his mind to make himself appear any way he chooses to be perceived.
Uatu himself committed the crime of allowing himself to be drawn into matters of human affairs. He first, admittedly as passively as possible, helped the Fantastic Four save Earth from Galactus, the planet eater. For this and later crimes, Uatu was put on trial by his own race. As a result, Uatu has sworn never again to interfere with his charges, but to only watch passively. Since then, he has from time to time made his presence known when matters of galactic significance are in the offing, but usually just appears, standing silently, watching.
The Watcher is an odd dresser, usually wearing what seems to be a kind of old Roman toga. He has always been depicted as bald, but the size and ths shape of his body seems to alter based on artistic interpretation. He has been drawn with a large, muscular body, or a smaller, thinner one that seems too small for the size of his head.
