Sheriff Walt Bannerman is a fictional character on the series The Dead Zone played by Chris Bruno. Bannerman is the Sheriff of a small Maine town, married to Sarah Bannerman. The couple married and raised Sarah's son, J. J. as their own after Sarah's fiancee Johnny Smith fell into a vegetative coma after a car accident. When Johnny awoke, the two had an awkward relationship as for Johnny his relationship with Sarah was yesterday, not several years before. Walt and Johnny grew closer and Walt came to trust Johnny's psychic abilities and the two worked together to solve crime.

Walt was killed in a church fire at Faith Heritage leaving behind Sarah, J.J. and his then, unborn daughter, Hope.
