Vulcans are a fictional
alien race from the
TV series Star Trek. Vulcans originate from the planet Vulcan or
Vulcanis. Vulcans are noted for their sense of logic, a philosophy they apply to all aspects of life, rejecting emotion completely.
The Vulcans were one of the founding races of The United Federation of Planets. They were the first race encountered by humans in their exploration of space.
Biology
Vulcans are quite human in appearance. Their most distinctive features are their arched eyebrows and pointed ears. Though skin color varies, most Vulcans have slightly tanned skin with a greenish hue, a result of their copper-based green blood. They are physically stronger than humans, having greater endurance and higher tolerance to heat, as well as greater lung capacity. This is likely due to the dry desert conditions of their home planet and its thin atmosphere.
Vulcans are very long-lived, their life span possibly exceeding 250 years. They also have telepathic abilites, rarely expressed but most often exhibited during the performance of a mind meld.
Vulcans prefer to keep their mating habits secret, reacting with what appears to be embarrassment when confronted about the Pon Farr. Approximately every seven years, Vulcan males and females experience the powerful urge to mate and must return to their home planet to mate or undergo ritual combat. The Pon Farr is a time when Vulcan logic fails and nature takes over. During this time, a Vulcan is prone to violent behavior and mood swings. If not alleviated via combat or mating, the Pon Farr can result in death.
Culture
The dominating aspect of Vulcan society is logic and the repression of all emotions. The practice of repression involves meditation, which they prefer to perform by candlelight. Vulcans consider repression of emotions vital to their society, and refer to a time in their past when their tendency toward violence dominated their society; a problem only solved when logic came to rule. When Vulcans lose control, their violent tendencies and emotional volatility become apparent.
Vulcans are largely vegetarians.
Marriage and family are extremely important to them. Arranged marriages are the norm.
Vulcan children undergo the Kahs-wan Ritual, in which they are left alone in the desert and must fend for themselves.
Well-Known Vulcans
Mr.Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy), was the first Vulcan character in Star Trek. Mr. Spock served as First Officer to Captain James T. Kirk.
Subcommander T'pol, played by Jolene Blalock, was the first Vulcan to serve in Starfleet, as depicted in the series Star Trek: Enterprise.
Security Chief Tuvok, played by Tim Russ, served as security officer in Star Trek: Voyager.
Trivia
In the 22nd century, during the series Enterprise, Vulcans retain remnants of their emotions. In series set at later stardates, such as Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek Voyager, Vulcans are much more stoic and logical.
