Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr. (b. October 20, 1958 New York City, NY) is an American actor well known for his role in the Lord of the Rings film series in which he played Aragorn. Mortensen was born in Manhattan to a Danish father and an American mother. He has two younger brothers, Charles and Walter and has dual citizenship in Denmark and the United States.
Mortensen spent his childhood traveling with his parents and has lived in Venezuela, Denmark, and Argentina. His parents divorced when he was eleven and he settled with his mother in New York. After graduating Watertown High School, he studied at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. Following he college, he began writing poetry and short stories and eventually moved to New York City where he studied acting. Three years later, he made his film debut in Witness.
Mortensen made his genre debut in The Purple Rose of Cairo and prior to his appearance in the Lord of the Rings films, had roles in the films, Salvation!, Tripwire, Young Guns II, The Reflecting Skin, Carlito's Way, The Prophecy , G.I. Jane, A Walk on the Moon, and Daylight. Mortensen followed up his LOTR success with the adventure film Hidalgo, and the thrillers A History of Violence and Eastern Promises.
In 2008, Mortensen will appear in the post-apocalyptic film The Road and in 2009, the Sylvester Stallone biopic of Edgar Allan Poe, Poe.
