Vanguard

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Vanguard is a fictional generation ship in Robert A. Heinlein's 1941 novelettes Universe and Common Sense (later combined as the 1963 novel Orphans of the Sky).

Launched by the Jordan Foundation on a journey to Centaurus in the early twenty-first century, a mutiny led by an engineer named Huff splits the ship into two camps. The scientists who live in the vessel's outer "lower" levels and the Muties (mutants and mutineers) who live in the central "upper" levels. The vessel is eventually brought under control, but fighting breaks out anew and a few survivors launch themselves into space in a small shuttle and land on a planet suitable for human life.

The Vanguard was the sister ship of the New Frontiers, the vessel that Lazarus Long and other members of the long-lived Howard Families used to escape Earth in Methuselah's Children
