Vandal Savage is a fictional comic book super-villain. He has been an adversary to various DC Comics superheroes over the decades. He was created in the 1940s, but he has been shown in various eras, opposing the heroes of those times.
The great thing about Vandal Savage is that, by the very nature of the character, he can appear in any time or setting. He has been shown operating in New Gondwanaland in the year 40,000 BCE and in Egypt in 1200 BCE, allied with the mad priest Akh-Ton against Teth-Adam (who would later become the villain Black Adam). He has fought against both the Golden Age heroes of the Justice Society of America, as well as the Modern Age heroes of the Justice League. He has been shown living as far into the future as the 853rd Century. He is a particular nemesis of the Golden Age Green Lantern and the Justice Society of America, as well as both the Silver and Modern Age Flash. His most persistent adversary has been Mitch Shelley, the Resurrection Man, whose power is to be restored to life every time he dies.
Savage has been the head of many criminal organizations down through the millennia. His most prevalent one is the Illumanati, a secret society dedicated to making him the world’s supreme ruler. He controls vast resources, precious relics, fantastic weaponry and has mastered deadly skills, all built up over the eons. He has had many children resulting in him having descendants living across the world. Some of these descendants are just a few generations removed from him, others thousands of generations removed. While he is immortal, he is not indestructible. He has been known to replenish damaged or weakened body parts or organs by harvesting them from these descendants of his bloodline.
Character Origin
Vandar Adg of the Blood Tribe was born in the year 50,000 B.C., a Cro-Magnon. His intelligence was expanded and his life span was infinitely lengthened when he was exposed to the rays of a strange meteorite.
The End of Vandal Savage
Vandal Savage's end will finally come in the distant 853rd Century, according to the DC Comics crossover limited series DC One Million (1998).
Spoiler Warning: Plot details and/or information about the ending follow. If you wish to enjoy the work first, stop reading here and return at another time.
In the year 85,271 A.D, he will be sent back in time to the site and moment of a nuclear explosion that he himself caused in the 20th century. Something to look forward to, but, until then, Vandal Savage is here to stay. Though, it's good to keep in mind that in the DC Universe, both past and future history have been altered before.
