V for Vendetta is a comic book created by Alan Moore (writer) and David Lloyd (artist). More than half of it was first published as a black-and-white serial in 1982.

The series is set in Great Britain in the near future. A masked anarchist, "V" does his best to undermine a totalitarian government that has arisen from the ashes of nuclear war that has destroyed much of the world.

Movie

On March 17, 2006, V for Vendetta was released as a feature film, produced by Matrix helmers The Wachowski Brothers and Joel Silver, and directed by first-time director James McTeigue. Vendetta stars Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving.

The politics of the film have sparked controversy, some saying it is an allegory for, George W. Bush's administration, today's War on Terror, and/or the ongoing military actions in Iraq. Given when and where the comic book was written, Thatcher's England is the obvious original target.

Many anarchists (including Alan Moore, who had his name removed from the project) were disappointed that the film was not more explicitly radical.
