Thanks also for the Ivanova image. You edited that article on my birthday and I got an autographed pic of Claudia along with Jerry Doyle and Michael O'Hare that same day. Way cool and thanks again. Just FYI, the next article I'm working on is Michael Garibaldi. Fraggenaught 19:12, 23 August 2006 (EDT)

Candy,
Thanks for the editing on the Captain Power page! I have alerted all the other CP fans that I know of the page's existence, so hopefully it will be added to soon. I'm still becoming familiar with this setup, so please forgive my lack of details at this point. I will learn the system as quickly as I can!

IDEA
I got an idea of how you can make scifipedia bigger and better in theory. My idea is that on the homepage you make a little section like the featured article but make it like and "ARTICLES WANTED" I am not good with programing and I have no idea how you get the featured article up there but i suggest that you make a program or HTML or whatever it is for the Articles wanted froum page and change the "ARTICLES WANTED" section once or twice a week it might just get people to
help in building stuff. They might know about it and say to themselves hey I know that and help out more. I mean if I was reading they wanted an article on something I knew about i would help.
I hope this helps let me know what you think
Thanks for listen
--Xfilesstargate 21:49, 22 July 2006 (EDT)
Samantha
Kudos for the article on Elizabeth!
Hey! I remembered the other important thing about including your signature on a discussion page. It makes it really easy to click the username to post a message on somebody else's discussion page so that they'll know next time they log on that someone has communicated with them. (That's if you remember to post it under the "Discussion" tab, of course, which I didn't do with the original posting on this.)
--JohnRDouglas 14:41, 12 June 2006 (EDT)
I was reminded by noticing in the Recent changes log that Chris Gabbert had done it with an image he put up: when you save an image onto the site, you should immediately mark it as protected. I've been forgetting and will try to go back and make sure all the images posted recently are protected.
--JohnRDouglas 14:41, 12 June 2006 (EDT)
Lexx VS LEXX
The title of the series should be "LEXX", but when refering to the ship, I don't think the entire word is capitalized. It's not an acronym, and it is a name, so the ship being called "Lexx" seems appropriate than calling it "LEXX" --DivineShadow218 15:28, 14 June 2006 (EDT)
Original Content
About adding conent to Scifipedia, all the article that I have put up here on the site are articles that I eather soly created or help with the majority. I am continueing to upload moy own articles on both this wiki, and wikipedia. So I figure why write twice as meny articles.--DivineShadow218 16:37, 14 June 2006 (EDT)
Lexx Episode Guide
First off, I would like to thanks you for cleaning up the Lexx article. I would have but I have been away for this past week. Well, about the lexx episode guide, Mayaxiong does not like my edits to it and keeps deleting my work. The work that she had done to that list was sloppy. I had the decency to put the summery of all seasons in (i know it has to be cleaned up and I will do that before the 23rd of July) as well as a full list of the episode linking to the right places. The only thing I deleted was info about who guest stared. I figured that info would go in the episode article itself and that no one needs to know if a particulare star is Mayaxiong's favorite. I have had problems with Mayaxiong in the past if fansite links, she had always put them on top of the external link list and when I would move them to the right place, she would delet the whole article and just put her links in. If I have any problems like that with her again, may I let you know and maybe you could set her straight? --DivineShadow218 19:11, 3 July 2006 (EDT)
Joe Straczynski article
Thanks for the image add to the Joe Straczynski article and thanks also for the "attaboy." I'm trying to make consistent improvements in my articles and it's encouraging to get positive feedback. As for the halo effect being deliberate, I think maybe JMS has an almost "cult" following second only to Frank Herbert. :)

Structural Question: Sub-sub-categories?
Is it possible to create a sub-category for a sub-category? There is a Cryptozoology sub-category in the main category of Paranormal, and I'd like to create some sub-categories (such as Hairy Bipeds, Lake Monsters) for it.
Oh, and what determines how an article is alphabetized? I've seen some authors alphabetized by first name, some by last.
Thanks!
Thanks for your thanks. ;-)
It's always nice to be attaboyed! And don't be surprised if you see a lot of my edits show up on the Doctor Who articles. You know how it is: your first love disappears for 16 years and all you get from her is one letter... then just when you think you've gotten over her, she suddenly starts showing up at the awards show in a gorgeous new gown and looking better than ever with her new short haircut and you find yourself infatuated all over again. (No, really, that's a Doctor Who analogy! ;-) ) --Histrion 08:50, 18 July 2006 (EDT)
Hey Candy!
I just posted this message on Bufocalvin's Discussion page and I thought you should be aware of the changes:
Hello Bufocalvin:
I noticed the new category of Cryptozoology and made a few changes.
In general, a category itself should contain minimal content and an actual Article by the same name is the best choice for substantial content relating to a subject.
Categories function as a sort of filing system. Many users who would be interested in, for instance, Cryptozoology, would search on the subject name rather than on "Category:Cryptozoology" for content so that's the logical place to have the information.
I've started the Cryptozoology Article and moved most of the content from the category piece (with due credit for the source which should how up in the history).
I've put the Article in the category of the same name but not in the higher-level category as well. Unless there's a compelling reason for including both a higher-level category and a sub-category of that higher-level category, the preferred method is to list only the lower-level category for an Article.
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to click through on my username and post on my Discussion page.
Your for a better SCIFIPEDIA.
As you can see, it's basically procedural stuff but it's also some things you should be aware of as you work on the site.
I was intrigued by your back-and-forth on the sub-sub-category business. If there's stuff like that that you need to know, you can always give me a call or drop me a line. I learned a lot abut the wiki procedures when I was entering all those original Articles during the set-up phase. Your experiment seems to have been highly instructional and I'd certainly not want to deprive you of the thrill of discovery but if there's a chance to save you some time, I'm ready and willing.
--JohnRDouglas 12:55, 19 July 2006 (EDT)
Dear Candy:
Some nice words about you in a note from Bufocalvin on my Discussion page. Check it out.
--JohnRDouglas 11:40, 20 July 2006 (EDT)
Use of Indefinite Articles with Acronyms
I noticed that you changed "an HPAC" to "a HPAC" in the Paranormal Terminology article. This will be the first time I defend my original. :) Since the term is pronounced "Aitch-PACK", I would suggest that "an" is the appropriate article. Generally, acronyms that start with a separately pronounced A, E, F, H, I, L, M, N, O, S, or X (pronounced "ay", "ee", "eff", "aitch", "eye", "ell", "emm", etc.) would use the "an" article, in my opinion. Here is an outside reference on it: Dr. Grammar. I can accept it either way, but I did want to give you the reasoning behind my initial choice. Thanks again for your attention to detail.
--Bufocalvin 12:19, 23 July 2006 (EDT)
Parapsychology Image
When you are looking for an image to add to the parapsychology topic, the best one might be Zener cards, which are used to test for telepathy.
Thanks!
--Bufocalvin 14:50, 2 August 2006 (EDT)
Thank You
Thanks for commenting on my Cameron Mitchell article, glad you liked it and most importantly, thanks for all the edits you've made to my articles.
--MarshAngel 14:26, 3 August 2006 (EDT)
Answerbacks comment
I'm glad you enjoyed the Answerbacks piece. :) In terms of it being a "recognized fannish" thing, I have to admit I made up the term. The phenomenon is real, but I figured this was a good place to start some things as well, as long as they reflect sci-fi reality. "Cute Little Thingie" is a term I've used with my circle, too...
--Bufocalvin 16:12, 3 August 2006 (EDT)
Edit to Carson Beckett
I appreciate all the edits you've made but there is just one change I have to argue for. The spelling of the Atlantus Outpost is not a mistake. Atlantus is the Ancient spelling for the city and has been used to differentiate the city from the outpost.
Response to your Recognition
Candy said, "I dub thee Bufo "SCIFIPEDIA" Calvin!"
I am honored, my liege. I shall endeavor to be worthy of the title. :)
Hmmm...if I write a lot of short pieces, would that be a "Stubtitle"? ;)
--Bufocalvin 09:35, 13 August 2006 (EDT)
Stargate Episode Lists
Hi Candy, I think a subcategory is a brilliant idea. I actually noticed just yesterday that all the episodes would eventually make a very very long list. Incidentally, something similar will probably need to be done for the X-Files category as that is also a long-running series.
Thanks for letting me know. I'll definitely help out.
--MarshAngel 14:32, 18 August 2006 (EDT)
Episode Guides
Yeah, creating categories for seasons in the episode guides would seem to make sense - as well as perhaps a category for the episode guide itself. I just wouldn't want to lose the season writeups themselves. Needless to say, a lot of change can occur over 28 (soon to be 29) seasons of a show. The description of each season has been a great way to cover some of those.
--Stilltim 16:10, 18 August 2006 (EDT)
That is a great idea
That was a great idea. I hope I did not mess it up with the work I have already done. If i have i am sorry. Let me know what i can do to help
--Xfilesstargate 16:14, 18 August 2006 (EDT)

Shawn Farrell Image
Hi Candy, just wanted to let you know that the image you added to the Shawn Farrell page is actually of Danny Farrell. Until you posted that pic, I never really saw a resemblance...but they do look a little a like :) http://www.usanetwork.com/series/the4400/theshow/characterprofiles/shawn/index.html

Hello all not sure if this is the best place to post this but I am sure you will let me know if it is not. I built a page but was unable to upload and image. I created the link then clicked on it and said upload image. It keeps comming back stating I have to be logged in to upload an image. Am I missing anything?
Thanks,

Cubicle Call
Thanks for stopping by! Let me turn my tv theme songs down...I apologize that my cubicle is such a mess. You know, there really isn't enough room in these things: I keep asking for a tesseracticle, but Facilities referred me to IT, who told me it would be six weeks. I could be wrong, but I think that's what they always say. :)
Thanks for the kind words! I'm having fun doing some of the organizing stuff. That's always been fun for me. I was explaining databases to a class once, and I said, "It's like those little plastic boxes and three by five cards that you played with as a kid." From the look I got, I realized not everyone played with those. ;) I've gone back to doing some short articles, and that seems to be working...I'm planning to put some more up this weekend. It's something I can catch as catch can, and I've been able to catch some lately.
You asked if I had any questions. There are some things...don't sweat getting the answers, I've asked in another place as well.
- Is it possible to link to a section in an article? For example, can I link to a specific term in the Paranormal Terminology section?
- There are articles I can't move when I'm re-organizing. They may be Creator articles, and I understand why those can't be edited. Should I just direct a recommendation to whoever posted it first?
- Do you know what the policy is on commercial links? You can see the discussion on my page and on John Douglas' page.
- Suppose an article already exists. What's the best way to set up a re-direct? I've been able to do it when I am creating both articles ("Canada" and "Canadian", for instance), but it seems like that's not the intent when one does it later.
As to the weather, we're not really into Fall locally yet. It doesn't snow here, regardless, but we will get into a rainy season. It will get more serious around October.
Anyway, thanks for the virtual visit. Maybe we'll bump into each other at the virtual network printer. :)

Coming Soon
By the way, have you looked at the 2006 or 2007 articles lately? I really like timelines, and I like "coming soon" information. I've been posting some brief listings there (and in earlier years as well). This is something I think could attract creator activity. If Scifipedia becomes a place to look for new and future items, it may be a place they would want to be.

Hi it is me again. I get it now. Thank you for all your help. If you would not mind could tell me if I made the Dark Angel Episode guide ride before i make one for the scound season. I made it under Subcategory Season One Epsodies becasue I knew that you had an idea and I wanted to make sure it was made the way we talked about.
Thanks

Dark Angel
Yea sorry about that i could not figure out how to make a sub category without making an new artical but I think I found a better way. I removed it from the list so that it won't be confuseing. If you meant deleating the whole artical than i don't know how to do that Anyway Thanks again

Responses on a Warm Autumn night
Thanks for the answers! I really appreciate the follow-up.
I've been able to move things: it's just that you aren't supposed to move a page into another page that already has something in it. That's why it seems like you need to do it in the beginning. I suppose I can just do an article with the link in it to the other article: it just won't be a redirect.
In Paranormal, the one article I can't recategorize is the Creator:Ghost Hunters article. It should go into Paranormal TV Series...although I suppose there could be a Ghost Hunters subcategory in the Paranormal TV Series category.
I'll send you more later...thanks!

Categorization: Universal Studios
Hi!
Here's one I can't recategorize. I'd like to remove the Movies category from Universal Studios, so that it just resides in the Studios category (which is a subcategory of Movies).

2006
Hi again! It has started to cool off here a bit...I understand you can see Fall colors over about 12,000 feet elevation. ;)
Just wanted to mention that I'm watching the 2006 article move up in the Popular Pages. It's cracked the top 20. I think it's continuing to climb because people must be returning to it frequently. I do check it myself daily to see what's happening (once I enter a listing, I tend to forget the details...that's what happens when you offload the memory), and I'm guessing other people do that as well. I've been adding quite a bit. I figured out some ways to track down first time airings of tv episodes. I've drawn the line at rebroadcasts, though. :) Even though listing current and coming things may not be the prime mission of Scifipedia, how could a Sci Fi resource not be concerned with the future? I'm still hoping that creators and promoters start listing things there.
Hope you are doing well.

Photo Submissions
Candy, thanks for the welcome. I have two questions about images.
First, is the Hugo Award image a photo of one of the SciFi.com Hugos? I would like permission to dupe it on my Hugo page with a link to the source (perhaps the wiki page?) To that end, I would like the year and recipient. None of this information is included on the image history page.
Second, I have several photos of award trophies to submit. What is the process? Do you need documented permission to reproduce photos of trophies found on other websites?

1000 Thanks (Oh, plus 1006)
Thanks for the mentions on the 2006 article! It would take a lot to get it to to top ten status, but it's working its way up there. :) I've been directly promoting Scifipedia: for example, I've e-mailed publishers to suggest they post listings here (carefully explaining the neutrality part). Hopefully, that will increase content and Sci Fi awareness of Scifipedia.

Charlie Jade images and copyright
Hey thanks for putting the image up! It was awesome to have them. I was able to explicitly secure permission and full access to the copyright material from the copyright holders of CharlieJade.com and all materials on that site. I even have the email of the web designer who put it together who was offered up by Robert Wertheimer (copyright owner). So I can probably dig up whatever we need to flesh out the articles visually... either from the website, or from actual source photography that the webmaster owns. Let me know how you want to proceed, and we can work something out. I have to finish working on the Charlie Jade articles, then I need to edit them hell out of them to get them OUT of second person tense. Gotta make them more objective... you can email me directly at corykoski at gmail dot com.

Any opinion on this? I'm inclined to think that a little redundancy isn't bad and the issue could be resolved by adding a link to the category into the article itself but I'd like to hear your thoughts.
Best,

Creators
Hi!
I've heard back from one of the creators I contacted: Mongoose Publishing. Do they need to do anything special, or should they just sign up on the site and start posting? I'm guessing they would work in the 2006 and 2007 articles, but they could also create articles about books and games that they publish. Should those articles be created in a special way to protect them? I'd like to get back to them tomorrow, if possible. Hopefully, this is the first of many. :)
Thanks!
--Bufocalvin 23:22, 10 October 2006 (EDT)
Good News
Thanks, I was wondering what happened to that. Also, thanks for getting rid of the redundant topic in the DW area. Eventually redundancy might be a good thing, but right now the whole DW area is pretty bare bones. When you're struggling to complete even a first version of most topics, a little redundancy can look very strange.

More Than One Way to Skin a Category
Thanks for noticing on the categories. As a database designer, categories are a passion. However, as a good Fortean, I shouldn't care...Forteans "should" believe that everything blends into everything else: that, although there appear to be red and yellow, at some point they are both orange. :) I have noticed that Forteans do tend to want to categorize...I think it's a natural human inclination.
Another thing I'm really enjoying doing is trying to make at least stubs for red links. I told Marshangel I consider us the "Visine Team", since we both like to get the red out. ;)
I'm in the middle of a certification process, which I hope to finish in the next couple of days. That's what I'm working on now, on an overcast Bay Area Sunday. Categorization can be squeezed into my time catch as catch can, which is another reason I'm getting some done.
Oh, and I did get a t-shirt, by the way...thanks! Some weeks back, I think.
Enjoy the Fall day!

You Can't Judge a Book By Its Category
No problem, it's fun to do. :) Believe it or not, I've been working intently on something for work. I'm in one of two new phases on that now, which may give me more time here...I'll probably know more tomorrow. I haven't quite finished categorizing the Literature category yet, but I think I did make some real progress. If things work out, I may be able to do more actual writing. :)
Oh, and the 2006 article has been moving up in the list of Popular Pages, probably partly prompted by your mention. It's not top 10, yet, but it's gone up several notches.
Enjoy the smile. :)

Expanding the Horizons
It's exciting that we are getting coverage for items from different countries, even though America will dominate the postings for some time, I think. I'm looking forward to reading about shows, books, and so on, that have not been distributed in the US. I'm going to look for events to post that take place outside of the US. For example, I just added an anime convention from Brazil to the 2006 article. :) While Sci Fi fans may be as compulsive as sports fans for detail and context, it is a global (and perhaps beyond) community.
--Bufocalvin 16:41, 20 October 2006 (EDT)
Location Organization
My inspiration of your editorial has in turn inspired me to do some organization of the Locations category. I think I have a bad habit of responding to whatever shows up on the Main Page, which may actually alter the intent of the reference as written (although I'm not sure it has). I thought I'd make the changes first, this time. :)

Torchwood
Two episodes aired yesterday. I saw the first one at about 2:30 this morning, but haven't seen the second. Seems like a pretty good start, but still a little early to be sure. I'd say this is a better set up episode than "Rose," which launched the new Who series. Apparently its ratings were extremely high for BBC 3, making it one of the top programs of the week and possibly a bigger hit than the program that spawned it.
It's much darker than Who, having a kind of X-Files feel, albeit slightly less serious, with occasional wicked flashes of British humor and some outrageous alien gadgets.
disambig
It's funny really. I knew there was more than one listing for Armageddon and The Lost World but until I actually started listing them I had no clue how many. You lear something new every day.

Question: Templates
We've been working on getting some organization in the Past Events category. As you probably know, Marsh Angel did a lot of date articles, and Still Tim has been getting the dates to sort in date (1, 2, 3, 11, 20) rather than text (1, 11, 2, 20, 3) order.
The year template automatically puts Past Events as a category. I've been breaking past events down into decades (for years) and months (for dates). I think it would be easier to use if a year was only in the appropriate decade category, rather than decade and Past Events. For one thing, the subcategory only seems to show up on the alpabetically appropriate page, so Decades doesn't even show on the first screen...while there all those years that are in both categories (Decade and Past Events). If you want to see an example, check 1818.
Is there a way to remove the automatic Past Events categorization?
Thanks!
Oh, and I liked the globalization article, by the way. :)

Random Goals Are Good, Right?

An actor is born, a hero lands, and a savior (?) is abducted. Check out April 10th for the way the Timeline can show interesting juxtapositions. :)
--Bufocalvin 19:16, 6 November 2006 (EST)
"Emergency! Emergency! Everybody to get from street!"
Not really a genre quote, but I'd say...25 trivia points for that one. :) Thanks for the kind words about the Timeline! It does seem to be growing pretty rapidly...MarshAngel added a welcome level of organization, and that's working its way through. I'm hoping for more fictional stuff, but it's starting to happen. When you say there was an emergency at the Sci Fi Channel, it conjures up some interesting images...vampires? Revolt by the unexpectedly sentient computer system? Giant boll weevils? A rip in the Space:1999/It's About Time continuum? Don't tell me the reality, that's private, and besides, this is more fun. ;) By the way, I've revised my unrealistic goal. I did some number crunching, and I was surprised that the postings weren't growing exponentially. I figured that more people would join and they would tend to post, but I've over-estimated that. My new goal: 3333 entries by the time the front page reaches 1 million views. It's possible, but a challenge, and that seems like a good thing. :)

Who episode project
Yes, I'm nearly done with the season topics. Thanks. Season 4 should be up tonight and I hope to get at least season 3 and maybe season 2 done before the 12th, because I think the Steven Taylor topic is scheduled to be a featured topic then. A couple of things that would be useful, though:
1) I want to put a disambiguation link at the top of the first three season topics in the line of "this topic is about the classic series (1963-1989). Go here for the new series" Is there a format we should use for that?
2) There are some nice Who images on the DW page of the main SciFi site. Is there any chance we could get those added to our library?
Thanks,

Sorry for stepping aside for a minute, but I've got a computer that won't log me into the site. Fortunately, I have the cookie on one of my computers, so I've been okay. However, logging in from scratch seems to be a problem. It's acting as though it doesn't recognize my password or username, but that seems unlikely. I requested the password be sent so I could double-check it, but that didn't happen.
Technical difficulties there, perhaps? If there =were= pod people (which there aren't) and there was resistance (which there isn't) and they could figure out our...um, the ==theoretical== technology, would they have been able to disrupt our...um, the theoretical communications? :)
One other technical thing: I sometimes have trouble getting an internal link to show just the display text. You can see it in the 2006 November article on November 10 with Doctor Who. I can't see the difference between that one and other Doctor Whos I have done (as well as other programs with an episode), and I'm pretty good at debugging. :) I thought a second (or in the case of a Twilo-ite, the second and third) set of eyes might be useful.
Oh, Aquaphibians are from the supermarionation show Stingray, "Everybody to get from street!" is from The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming! (a comedy with Carl Reiner)...Twilo-ites are probably worth...oh, 15 points.

Rivulets of Thought
1. It's still possible we'll make the 3333 by 1m, but the numerical analysis makes it long odds. When I took a snapshot earlier of the past 500 new pages, we were only averaging about 27 a day. Even if we double that (which we might), we'd need six days. I don't have access to the growth rate on cumulative hits on the front page, but I think it's growing more rapidly than that. Besides, I want that stat to go up more quickly as well. :)
2. However, MarshAngel is contributing a lot today, which helps. :)
3. As an educator, I know the most effective way to accomplish something is to enable people and then encourage them to participate. Who are the groups to attract, and how to attract them? Is it more effective to try to find Prolifics (who post more than 20 articles a week on a variety of topics like MarshAngel), Comprehensives (like Cokobware posting so many Charlie Jade articles), or hordes of Dabblers (who post one or two articles on topics of interest to themselves, like the people who post about themselves)? I'm sure there are other populations. Does reaching out work? To whom? Creators? Distributors? Fan groups? One of the biggest questions: why should people post here rather than (or in addition to) somewhere else? Just thoughts...
4. I've noticed I'm inconsistent (both with myself and with others) about capitalization. That may be the hardest thing about the linking in Scifipedia, that it's case sensitive. I've decided to capitalize every major word in a category name, but I'm uncomfortable doing that in an article name. For example, I'm fine with a category that is Doc Savage Books, but not comfortable with an article that is Star Wars (Novelization). I'm sure our group wisdom will settle on a path for that.
5. I'm having lots of fun with categories! I think that's a place that Scifipedia can differentiate itself: facts are easy compared to connections. =Those= take real knowledge.
6. Another approach I have is to just hit a Random Page and work on at least one red link.
7. I figure that you've guessed that another thing I do is just go into my library and start posting based on things on the shelves. There's enough there to get us to 10,000. ;)
8. Thanks for looking at that link in November! Be nice if my visual acuity was a mite better...it's not bad, but I wasn't spotting that as a French brace (which is kind of the techie name for a squiggly bracket). I've fixed it. You were helpful, as always.

In with the In Crowd
One more comment: Sci Fi has always been a fluid definition, but it's interesting what gets included here. For example, Psycho (and other non-fantasy horror) appear. I do take some of the stuff from the front page and put it into the data pages, but I draw the line there. For people who include horror, where do you draw the line? There certainly is fantasy horror (like Nightmare on Elm Street) but mere brutality isn't enough for me. Does the mutilation part make, say, Chinatown a reasonable film for inclusion? And what does one do with a show which is generally not Sci Fi, but includes a Sci Fi episode? The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, a show which is generally a non-fantasy sitcom, ran a parallel universe episode (reached through a Sci Fi technology, no less). That one episode would qualify, but does that now mean that the entire show does? Just early morning musings...
