Characters Who

I'm glad you're involved.  :) Should we make a discussion category, like the one Lady Aleena did for the Title Case vs. Sentence case issue? Other folks may want to contribute. I'm actually fine with "Actors who have played" myself. I can see the universes one being fuzzy...database people don't like fuzz.  :)

Quick database person story: my wife and I had just moved. We were unpacking things, and I happened to get the box with the spices. I yelled to her in the other room, "How do you put the spices in the drawer?" "What?" "How do you put the spices in the drawer? Do you do it alphabetically, or..." "I guess I put the ones I use the most in the front." "Okay, I'm going to do it by frequency, and then within frequency, I'm going to do it alphabetically." "Just go unpack something else..."

What people don't get about that story (which usually gets a laugh in class), is that it absolutely would not bother me if a week later they were completely out of order. What people like me need is a rule...the decision needs to be made once, and then applied in the future repeatedly. That way, when you only have a few seconds, you can fix it without thinking about it.

If you say "Universes which are also characters names are done as 'Actors who have appeared in the ZZ universe', and ones that are not are 'ZZ universe actors'", I get concerned about the depth of knowledge I need to create the categories. Quick: is Omicron a character or a planet? How about Transformers...if someone has appeared in those movies/TV series and not played one of the Transformers (Shia LeBeouf, for example), is he a Transformers universe actor? The actor who voiced Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen, in the movie) is a Transformers actor? I'm not sure somebody wouldn't want to put Shia in a Transformers actors category if they saw one.

Requires more consideration, I'd say.  :)

March 1, 2008 Stats

Here's the monthly run.  :) Just to remind you, since I take this in the morning it's not entirely accurate, but it's pretty close.

Front Page Hits (FPH)

As you noted, traffic is up.  :) February 1st, I took a figure of 2,383,075. This morning, my figure was 2,493,006. That's a raw increase of 109,931. That's a five percent increase, remarkable in a lot of fields. The daily hit rate shows it even more. The new daily was about 3791 versus 2341 in January. That's about an 162% increase, definitely a happy number.  :)

Daily Article Contribution Rate (DACR)

This one was down. While we certainly added articles (9164 March 1st versus 8892 on February 1st, a 3% increase), it was at a much slower rate. Our daily rate dropped to 9.38 in February versus 12.91 in January. That's about a 27% drop.

Intuitive Analysis

Is that an oxymoron?  :) As to the drop in the DACR, I think the conversion project may have contributed. I've been working on that a lot, and I think Marsh Angel has as well. I did check the number of weekend days in each month, and those were the same (8). As to holidays, January has New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Day. February has President's Day. My guess now is that those are not a huge difference in the DACR.

I'm pleased to see the jump in the FPH. During the conversion, Scifipedia is much less user friendly. It may be necessary to click on two categories to get the information you want (both XYZ Actors and XYZ actors, for example). We'll get that straightened out fairly soon, but I'm glad it's not having an obviously big impact.

As to 10K by April 1st, we now need a DACR of almost 27 in March. That's close to tripling the rate in February, more than doubling January. I still think that's possible.

One new figure: the hits on the 2008 article. This morning, that's at 6176, ranked 126. My updating of that has slowed considerably during the conversion, but I'm trying to keep it up to date. I'm interested in how quickly it gets to be a top article. Each year, it will be harder for the current year article to become top 20 (due to the cumulative numbers for other articles). I hope it gets there, though...I use it a lot myself.  :)

I also hope you enjoy these...I enjoy doing them.  :)

Thanks and El Chup

Thanks for the kind words! El Chup is very popular worldwide in Spanish-speaking areas. It's very big in pop culture (including songs, t-shirts, and such). It makes me think that there may be a lot of Spanish speakers visiting Scifipedia. Might be interesting to see how an article in Spanish (with translation) would track. Enhorabuena por la ciencia ficción!

--bufocalvin 19:47, 1 March 2008 (EST)

Yeti and Abominable Snowman

Do you mind if I merge those two articles? I should have made a redirect a long time ago from Yeti to Abominable Snowman, but I think when I worked on the latter, I didn't now how to do a redirect.  :) It really is a case of AKA, although Abominable Snowman is an imprecise term (as is "Yeti", which may basically mean "that thing").

--bufocalvin 00:23, 5 March 2008 (EST)

Stargate Question

Hi Candy, I wasn't quite certain what they called it in the film, except I was almost certain that they didn't call it a MALP. I took a look at the movie transcript and it seems they just referred to it as a probe.

--MarshAngel 07:49, 6 March 2008 (EST)

Something To Do at Lunch

While I don't =mind= doing the conversion project (in fact, it can be fun), I wanted to do something different to further enhance the value of Scifipedia.  :) I added a category called Online reading. It's a group of articles that have either full text or links to free full text literature. I checked, and I was able to use it to get to a Project Gutenberg text and read it (without downloading) on my Kindle (albeit one page at a time), so I would guess people could read it on a web-enabled cell phone as well.

It could "save" somebody stuck in an airport. It could also increase daily hits, since somebody might come back for several days in a row to complete a book.  :)

"Van-do voo-dum, tand kreeg".

Growing and Shrinking

Thanks for featuring the Growing and Shrinking article yesterday! Although I'm now ambivalent about the list being in it, I'm proud of that one.  :) While I was working on the conversion, I noticed that you have a different Tarzan (Gordon Scott) pictured in the Johnny Weissmuler article. There's a nice picture of JM here JM, although there are a lot of them out there.  :)

I'm a Kindler!

I use my Kindle literally every day.  :) I also read paperbooks every day, but when I'm out and about, it's the Kindle for sure. Having the books with me on the Kindle is cheaper, easier, and more ecological. I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of the traditional tactile feel for that. I also use the web-browsing. Here's a great example. My wife heard an author on the radio, and she thought the book would make a good gift for something we were attending the next day. First, I downloaded the first chapter for free through the Kindle. You can usually do that. I thought it looked like a good choice, so I tried to find it locally. I sent an e-mail request to a Borders (you can do that), but they need two hours to respond. When we went there, it turned out it wasn't in stock. While in the store, I used the Kindle to get the phone numbers (from the web) for two Barnes & Noble stores in the area. They were also sold out.

If it was a book I wanted to read, I could have been reading it a minute after I heard about it, and at less than half the cover price (and more than $5 cheaper than the Amazon discounted price)...no chance of it being sold out.  ;) The book would also have been searchable, and I could have created annotations and bookmarks without defacing a paper copy, or working with external notes.

Do I sound like I like it?  :)

I like it enough that we got one for SpawnofBufo for a birthday present. I loaded about 200 books (free, public domain etexts) onto an SD card, and gave that as well. That one SD card could hold thousands of typical books.

I can certainly see ways to improve it, and the price point is still high (we effectively had some credit card points that could be used to lower the price). However, it seems quite likely to me that this (and possibly competitors) will change publishing. Can you imagine all of a person's college textbooks in a pocket? Self-publishing becomes much more practical, expanding the choices for first time and niche publishing.

Thanks for asking!

--bufocalvin 14:06, 10 March 2008 (EDT)

Sharing on the Kindle

That is an area where people see diminished value in a Kindle edition over a paperbook. You can't resell a book you've bought on the Kindle, if you don't own the rights to it.

You could theoretically lend somebody your Kindle so that person could read a book that you've bought. I don't think that's going to happen a lot, except for short pieces or if you are on vacation together.

However, if the work is in the public domain, you can give it as a gift to a Kindler by putting it on an SD card, like I did. Also, you can lend and share ebooks to which you do own the rights easily. You can e-mail somebody a text file, and they can transfer it to the Kindle for free via USB cable or saving to an SD. For ten cents (!) they can have it sent to their Kindle by Amazon (assuming you give them that permission).

It could theoretically cause a problem for used bookstores, but those are not always in business to make a profit, anyway. I was a bookstore manager for years, and I know some of the economics. Many people who own used bookstores do it out of love of books, not as their necessary means of income.

It's not dissiimilar to Itunes, really. Used record/CD stores still exist.  :)

Check

Hi! Interesting things happening here recently. I like that Larry is adding articles on the Star Trek: The Original Series characters. MarshAngel added an article on one of my favorite movies, the 7 Faces of Dr. Lao. Making 10k by April 1st will be tough, but I still have some hope.  :) I'm seeing the progress in the Title Conversion Project. I think we'll have it largely under control by July 1st. One very positive impact to the database update they did...before that, I often had to hit f% while a page was loading to get it to complete...that doesn't happen now.  :)

Oh, and a Kindle thing: I published an article for it on March 14th, and I've already sold three copies! Two of them weren't even to me.  ;) It probably doesn't sound like much, but it didn't cost me anything to post it, and I'm getting 35% of the price I set on each one sold. The key thing is this is a way for authors to directly reach an audience. Not just an audience...potentially, publishers. That's not my goal on this one at all, but I'm reading In Her Name (which is just for the Kindle at this point), and it is good and could sell in paperback. I'll be interested to see if it gets picked up by somebody.

I'm not a big fan of shoes, but I hope you're back in yours soon.  :)

Thank you for providing a wonderful experience here! It's been a lot of fun. I've referred many people to it. I've been very impressed with the quality of writing here (especially from MarshAngel and Larry7639). I've also been proud of the work I've done here: some of the writing I've done here is up with the best writing I've ever done.

I particularly liked doing the organizational part. I thought the website was very user-friendly, and had been improving. I thought it was one of the most navigable sites on the web, and appealing to a wide variety of people.

This has all been largely due to your nurturing guidance. I hope your bosses realize what an asset you are. As Scifipedia continues to grow in popularity and influence, I hope you feel the joy (and get the credit) you deserve for its success.

April 1 Stats

No jokes.  :) I don't think we'll make 10k by the end of day. Right now, we have 9529 articles, versus 9164 when I took it on March 1st. That 365 difference is an increase of 4%...the previous month, we'd had an increase of 3%. Not only did the number of articles increase but the rate increased as well. The DAR was 11.77, a 126 percent increase over February's 9.38 rate.

Front page hits were at 2647894, versus 2493006, a 6% increase. Again, the rate also increased over the 5% growth in February. Daily front page hits were 4996, almost at the magically arbitrary number of 5000.  :) That's a 132% increase...not as much as February's 162%, but still great.

Thanks!

Checking in

Hi again!  :) Making some real progress on the conversion: about 500 in the Redundant Categories category. It feels a little weird, because doing this unravels most of the connections, like pulling at the thread on a sweater.  :) However, sweaters can reknitted, and the same is true here. It won't take that long to repair the links. I'm still looking at July 1st as a day when I'll feel most of the conversion has been done. We didn't make the 10K yet, but that should happen well before that, too. I've plugged a few things into 2008, which makes me feel better.  ;)

Hope you're doing well...

They're Off

Okay, it's a race.  :) I don't think it will take you as long to do each one, but I do have a head start.  ;)

"He's jammin' down the pedal like he's never comin' back."

Or maybe more appropriately:

"He won't quit, because we know there's no such word as fail..."

Speaking of Speed Racer (that's the first quote), have you seen clips from the movie? They've done some very interesting technical things with the look of it. We have a link to a trailer in our article. I'm looking forward to that one, and to Get Smart. Not sure I'll get my wife to either of those, though.  ;)

I've been working on the Movies by Actor category. When I get that cleaned out, I can get rid of that Title Case category.  :)

Oh, and I'd noticed the same thing on the formatting bar, but it healed pretty quickly...maybe we should come up with some other things for MA to ask about.  ;)

What makes you think Miss Pettigrew wouldn't be my pick more than hers?  :) I'd guess I'm a lot more of a screwball comedy fan than she is.  ;) She's just not that big on movies were, as she puts it, she ends up saying, "I'm sure!" a lot.  :)

Of course, I've done a few more.  ;)

Titans together!

There's a new version of the Teen Titans, so I'd like to update the article on them. Here's a picture.

Speedy again.

Since there is a new Speedy character, I have separated the character out from the Red Arrow character. The only picture of the new Speedy that I can find is the eighth picture from the top of this web site.

Thanks So Much for the Vote of Confidence!

It felt like a bit of a judgment call, so I really appreciate you letting me know it was okay. I definitely wanted to preserve the work (although, as you can imagine, it's not the way I would have expressed my opinion in a similar situation ;) ). However, the content didn't seem right for an article.

As for the fun weekend, hey, I plan to spend some time in Scifipedia...what could be more fun than that?  ;)

By the way, the Kindle's still lots of fun, and I keep finding new tricks. I've sold more than twenty copies of my article, and that's fun, too.  :)

Speaking of fun, have some yourself this weekend.  :)

Green Lantern again.

As you may have picked up on by now, I'm doing a bit of refurbishing on the Green Lantern section. As such, I have a bunch of new pictures that I would like to use in the various articles. Here they are.

Definitely, the longest list I have ever brought to you. Still they'll be spread over the use of several articles. I particularly want to get good pictures of the Golden Age Green Lantern, which are the first two on the list. Anyway, take your time with it, it may take a while for me to complete this project.

Can I confess something? What got me started on this was the desire to get that rude posting about the new Doctor Who spin off out of the "New Additions" list on the Main Page, so I thought of how I could create a bunch of new articles quickly. I came up with the idea of breaking up the Green lantern article, like I did with the Rogues a while back. Anyway, all these new articles are not quite yet what I'd like them to be, but I will work on it.

Very Clever!

I'm very impressed with you name-dropping another Jimmy Stewart movie in your comment! I have to tell you, I definitely think we have the Right of Way to Magic Town! Scifipedia is undoubtedly The Greatest Show on Earth! I'm so giddy, I practically have Vertigo. When I look out my Rear Window at the other sites, I wish they could all have this quality, but hey, You Can't Take It With You.  :)

That's enough of that! Time to stop, Vivacious Lady...drat! Once I get started, that's the Fool's Parade to...darn! I could say it's My Secret Identity as The Man Who Knew Too Much, but...gosh all hemlock!

Seriously, I was impressed.  ;)

May Day Stats

We have 9529 articles, versus 9743 on April 1st, which is a difference of 214 or a 2% increase...half of the 4% increase we'd had in March. The DAR (Daily Article Rate) dropped 39%: 7.133 versus 11.77. I would guess this is largely due to the artificial push I'd made to get to the arbitrary goal of 10K by April 1st. At the current rate, we'll hit that in 36 days: first week of June.

The front page hits continued to grow. We are at 2790755 versus 2647894, an increase of 142861, or 5%. Average daily hits actually dropped about 4% (4762 versus 4966). It's probably the second number that is more significant: inevitably, front page hits will grow if =anybody= visits. I think the daily hit rate is more indicative of "heat".

The 2008 article actually dropped in rank: it went to 115 from 116. I've been (relatively) neglecting it, converting to the Sentence case...the 8th labour of Hercules ;). Hey, at least it's not Sisyphus.  ;) I think that may have affected it, but of course, it's almost the same, and it could be due to other articles having a rush of interest. I had just expected it to go up in ranking.

Hope you're doing well...oh, I've sold about 50 articles of my Kindle article: pretty exciting! --bufocalvin 11:19, 1 May 2008 (EDT)

Maintaining Your Balance

Thanks for the info! I'm sorry if we've disappointed any kind of vision, but I do think that so many great things have been done (and will be done) that it is a valuable site.

One suggestion: the front page could be set up with one main article (like the featured article). That article could be a redirect to another article. Without a date on it, you could count on the "regulars" to rotate that article to keep it fresh. The other article could be set up as a Creator article, I assume, and maybe Marsh and Larry and I (or whoever you thought would be a good choice) could be listed as the Creator for that so we could edit it. That article could be a redirect to any of the existing articles.

I may have made that more complicated than it needed to be. :) Basically, I'm guessing that you could give a few people access to editing a front page article that would =only= be a link to some other article that exists in the Scifipedia. That way, there wouldn't be any additional vetting needed by Sci Fi Channel, since there would be no new content representing the channel.

It wouldn't be as rich as having your journal, and the hot topics, and This Day in Sci Fi, but it would keep it from looking stale.

If it's okay, I'd like to redirect the links on the front page today, since they don't go anywhere. Up to you...

I hope this is an opportunity for you to focus on something else you enjoy.

--bufocalvin 22:58, 10 May 2008 (EDT)

Progress!

Okay, it's not as nice as it was, but I did get Hot Topics and This Day to show up in the Front Page. I randomized both of those, although if the Featured Article had been a stub, I would have randomized again until I got one with some length.

The featured article isn't showing there, but I think the redirect may be written # redirect instead of #redirect. That makes it number it, which is what it appears to be doing. Also, I made the redirect article for that just have the name Featured Article. I was going to name it Today's Featured Article, but decided we shouldn't commit to it changing each day in the name of it.  :)

I saw that you showed Larry how to do pictures: excellent!

--bufocalvin 00:03, 12 May 2008 (EDT)

Yeah!

I did it. Now that I can download pictures on my own, I am free! Scifipedia will go on!

Larry7639 00:23, 12 May 2008 (EDT)

Main Page

Is it possible for us to edit the Main Page? That would let us put in excerpts and deal with the redirects. Would the excerpts need to be vetted by somebody? I would assume we would remove the Editor's Journal, unless you are able to contribute once a week (or even once a month) or so, since that is representative of the Sci Fi Channel. Of course, it could be changed to a vox populi thing, but that might be risky for the corporation.

It's very exciting that Larry can do pictures! Knowing that he will continue his involvement with SFP is a great relief and a very positive development. I'm not a visual person myself, but they've been a big part of making Scifipedia look professional. Does anything need to be done concerning the intellectual property rights before a picture is used?

One more thing: what about removing articles, like all those Redundant Categories? Could we have permission to delete articles?

This is all exciting, although a bit scary...of course, those two often go together.  ;)

--bufocalvin 14:29, 17 May 2008 (EDT)

Shortcut

I realized the name Discussion: Maintenance Mode is hard to type, so I created a redirect from DMM.  :) I'm sure you've seen it, but that's where some of us are discussing best practices.

By the way, would you care to share an opinion on what to do with the Editor's Journal? We could reprint old ones, or possibly write something ourselves? We could delete it, or maybe change it to a quote of the day?
