Twelve Colonie)
2,000 years ago, twelve of the thirteen tribes of Kobol left the planet due to an issue involving their gods, settling on 12 worlds some distance away. Their names and icons originally corresponded to the twelve signs of the ancient tribes, although these names drifted over time.
In the original series the religious text known as the Book of the Word indicated that human life originated on Kobol. The twelve tribes of man were forced to abandon the planet following an ecological disaster related to technology. In their travels they passed through a magnetic void, a space phenomenon that causes sensor malfunctions and can cause ships to become lost. The tribes eventually settled on twelve planets that became known as the twelve colonies.
In the reimagined series, Commander William Adama and President Laura Roslin mention leaving the solar system, it is unclear whether all twelve colonies are in this solar system or what the name of this star might be. However, Caprica, Virgon, and Ragnar, a gas giant, may be within the same star system (Miniseries).
The Colonies had approximately 20 billion inhabitants prior to the Cylon attack (The Resistance).
The Colonies maintained some minor observatories and listening posts in outlying star systems. Economic activity, such as tylium mining also occurred outside of the immediate vicinity around the Colonies (Hero).
The Twelve Colonies
Aerelon
Aerelon (Aries) is one of the poorer colonies. Its main industry is farming. A mining colony, Troy, is believed to be in the vicinity of Aerelon. The colony suffered an unspecified disaster that killed most of the population. Troy was believed to be the home of Sharon Valerii and her parents prior to the realization that she was a Cylon. Real natives of Aerelon included Saul Tigh, Sekou Hamilton and Socinus. In the episode "Dirty Hands", Gaius Baltar claimed to have originated on Aerelon in the town of Cuffles Breath Wash. He worked hard to rid himself of the gravelly accents of a native speaker and left the planet at eighteen.

They interpret the sacred scrolls literally, oppose legalized abortion and believe children are the property of their parents. Known Gemenese include Representative Sarah Porter, Chief Galen Tyrol, Rya Kibby, and Coporal Venner.

Natives of Sagittaron include Anastasia Dualla, Tom Zarek, Vlance and Leon Grimes. Sagittarians are known for their objection to modern technologies and medicines. Their reservations were confirmed when it was discovered that Dr. Robert, a Caprican doctor, murdered Sagittarians on New Caprica and continued to do so on Galactica to ill Sagittarian refugees.
