Plot

After discovering the address in the Ancient database, The Atlantis team visits the planet Doronda, a world once friendly to the Ancients, now devoid of life. The remains of several Wraith vessels lie in orbit of the planet and an Ancient outpost appears to be the only undamaged structure on the planet. Inside the structure they discover several dead bodies. They determine the outpost may be similar to the Ancient satellite weapon.

Ronon and Teyla travel to the planet Belkan to trade some Athosian workers for disease-resistant flaxi to increase the Athosian crop yield in. She attempts to negotiate with Hendon but his offer proves unreasonable. Angry at the offer, Ronon threatens Hendon and Teyla later chastises him for interfering in the trade process which he clearly does not understand.

Ronon leaves her and she is approached by Mattas who informs her that Ronon is not the only survivor of Sateda. Ronon reunites with a member of his regimen, Solen Sincha, who informs him that thee hundred civilians were saved including his Task Master, Kell. Ronon uses Teyla's connections to arrange a meeting with Kell who is on the planet to trade. Upon meeting him, Dex shoots and kills him before Kell can say a word. Ronon reveals that Kell was a coward and a traitor who allowed thousands of Satedans to die to save himself and his family. Teyla understands but is angered that he misused her friendship.

McKay and Zelenka determine that the outpost was a failed Ancient experiment known as Project Arcturus. If successful, the project would have produced the power equivalent of twenty-five fully powered zero point modules by drawing energy from this universe rather than subspace. The project failed however, and the Ancient scientists gave their lives attempting to shut it down.

McKay believes the Ancients were in a rush to complete the weapon as a last resort. He believes he can complete the work and make the experiment a success. McKay returns to Doronda with Collins to test his theories but the radiation begins to leak out of the chamber and Collins attempt to give more power to the containment field manually, results in his death inside the command access tube

Despite this initial failure, McKay believes he can succeed. Though Dr. Weir is against the idea, she is convinced when Sheppard agrees to trust McKay's instincts. McKay believes the automatic containment protocols are the problem and manually adjusting them should solve the problem. While he and Sheppard return to Doronda to make a second attempt, Zelenka discovers the reason the experiment failed. The concept itself was flawed. Extracting energy from our universe is impossible. The particles being created and destroyed within the containment field interacted with the field making it impossible to contain the radiation which then leaked from the chamber into the access tubes and outward. Zelenka attempts to warn McKay but he refuses to listen.

As Zelenka predicts, the containment field fails and an overload begins. McKay is unable to shut it down and he and Sheppard must escape aboard the puddle jumper. The weapon atop the outpost begins to fire, in an attempt to stave off the overload, aiming at any target in space. The Daedalus arrives just in time to provide cover so the puddle jumper can make it to the space gate. The Daedalus immediately enters hyperspace just as most of the solar system is destroyed in a massive explosion.

McKay attempts to make amends for his failure and his arrogance. He apologizes to Sheppard for having damaged his trust in him. Sheppard assures him that it will take a while, but he will earn back his trust.
