Transylvania is a region in western Romania.
Formerly an independent country, it became firmly part of the Sci Fi universe when Bram Stoker used it as the setting for his novel, Dracula. In fact, Count Dracula is arguably named after and based on "Vlad the Impaler" (Vlad Tepes), a famous figure in Transylvanian history. Stoker describes Dracula (which was a nickname for Vlad) as being clean-shaven except for a long moustache, and Vlad had a particularly long moustache.
Stoker was using research he had done of the region to craft his story. Transylvania was the setting for other horror stories, and has come to be associated with werewolves and vampires in America.
