Tor Johnson (October 19, 1903 – May 12, 1971) Swedish-born professional wrestler who toured America as the “Super Swedish Angel” and made his film début in the W.C. Fields comedy The Man on the Flying Trapeze (1935) before appearing in The Ghost Catchers (1944) and Road to Rio (1947). After retiring from the ring, the bald, hulking actor became typecast as a monster, most notably in such poverty-row quickies for Ed Wood, Jr. as Bride of the Monster (1954), Plan 9 from Outer Space (1958) and Night of the Ghouls (1959). Following roles in The Black Sleep (1956), The Unearthly (1957) and The Beast of Yucca Flats (1961), he recreated his character “Lobo” for a series of personal appearances in Southern California during the late 1960s. Tor Johnson masks are still a popular Halloween item and he was played by George “The Animal” Steele (Jim Myers) in Ed Wood (1994).
