Tokyo is the capital city of Japan, the seat of the Japanese government and Imperial Palace, and home to the Japanese Imperial Family.

In 2006, it was the most populous city in the world. The term Tokyo is used somewhat loosely to refer to the city and its surrounding areas.

Tokyo has been the site of much sci-fi activity (including fandom, publishing, and so on) and has been the setting for sci-fi works. Western fans know some of the city's architecture from its destruction in Japanese Giant Monster movies.
