Tod Browning (Charles Albert Browning) (1880-1962) American writer, producer and director. After running away to join the circus in 1896, he became a clown for the Ringling Brothers and performed a âHypnotic Living Corpseâ act before appearing in vaudeville. Following his role as a comic undertaker in D.W. Griffithâs Scenting a Terrible Crime (1913), he moved to Hollywood where he made his directorial début with the two-reel comedy The Lucky Transfer (1915). Other shorts and stints both in front and behind the camera on Intolerance (1916) led to his feature début, Jim Bludso (1917). Despite problems with the studios because of his alcoholism, Browning made his comeback with The Unholy Three (1925), starring Lon Chaney Sr. Together they collaborated on a series of successful pictures, including The Unknown (1927), London After Midnight (1927), West of Zanzibar (1928) and a sound remake of The Unholy Three (1930) prior to Chaneyâs premature death. Browning had a hit with Dracula (1930), but his career went into a terminal slide with Freaks (1932), Mark of the Vampire (1935), The Devil-Doll (1936) and Miracles for Sale (1939). He retired in 1942 and later died of the same throat cancer as Chaney without ever giving a major interview about his career.

It's usually best to give a very general overview to a story first, then plot details. When including the plot or essential details in your article (which could ruin the pleasure of discovery for some readers), it is important to include the spoiler tag before any give-away material.
