Tobias Vincent Maguire (June 27, 1975 Santa Monica, California - ) is an American actor best known for his portrayal of Peter Parker (Spider-Man) in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie series. Maguire was born to construction worker Vincent Maguire and secretary Wendy Brown. Following his unmarried parents' separation, he and his mother moved several times, living with various relatives. Once an aspiring actress, Wendy encouraged her son to pursue acting and he began acting in his youth, appearing in commercials. His early roles included small roles in the film The Wizard, the popular comedy, Roseanne and Eerie, Indiana. He made his film debut alongside Robert Deniro and Leonardo DiCaprio in This Boy's Life.
Maguire increased his profile in films such as The Ice Storm, Deconstructing Harry, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and his first genre film, the artful Pleasantville. He was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for his leading performance in the meaningful drama, The Cider House Rules. He starred alongside Skeet Ulrich in Ride with the Devil and Michael Douglas and Frances McDormand in the Oscar-winning film, Wonderboys.
Maguire was a surprise casting choice for the title role in the 2002 film adaptation of the comic Spider-Man. Maguire won over fans and went on to star in the film's sequels Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. In between sequels, he also appeared in the acclaimed Seabiscuit and in 2007, he will appear in Quiet Type. It has been announced that he will appear in Tokyo Suckerpunch in 2008.
