Tie-ins)
A tie-in is one work that is associated with another more prominent work.
For example, when a blockbuster movie is being released, it is commonly accompanied by one or more books based on the movie, perhaps a video game, collectible action figures, and there are a lot of other possibilities.
It is typically hoped that the popularity of the better-known work will increase the sales of the other works.
In some cases, an existing work may be re-branded to make it a tie-in.
Generally, tie-ins are timed to coincide with the flush of interest when the main work appears. However, in some cases, tie-ins may continue to be created even after the primary work has arced.
Tie-ins are differentiated from fan fiction because the tie-in is authorized by the rights holder of the primary work.
A specific type of tie-in is a novelization, a novel based on a work in another medium. Not all books based on a movie or TV series are novelizations: picture books and pop-up books can be tie-ins, but not novelizations.
