Thor is a fictional comic book super-hero published by Marvel Comics. Thor is considered to be the actual God of Thunder, based on character from Norse mythology. Thor was one of the first Marvel super-heroes of the Silver Age of Comics, and a founding member of The Avengers. Thor is considered one of the strongest and most powerful of the Marvel super-heroes. His strength is on a par with the Hulk's, and he's said to be as powerful as Superman. Thor was a founding member of the Avengers, Marvel's premier superhero group. With his magic uru hammer, called Miljolnir, Thor can perform a variety of true miracles. He can fly at incredible speeds, control the weather, jump through dimensions, as well as absorb and channel bursts of energy. The hammer itself can smash through anything, can be flung on its own, and be summoned back to its master. Part of the enchantment is that only Thor can lift it.

In his own comic, Thor is backed up by an entire group of Norse gods, who live in the mythical Asgard. Asgard is accessable to Earth through the dimension spanning Rainbow Bridge, guarded by the ever-watchful Hemdall. Thor's best friends are Balder the Brave, Hogun the Grim, and the voluminous Volstagg, sometimes referred to collectively as the Warrior's Three. His father is Odin, ruler of the Norse gods, and his adopted brother, Loki is also his arch nemesis. When he first began, he thought himself in love with the mortal nurse, Jane Foster. When that relationship didn't work out (Jane could never be happy among his immortal family) Thor realized his true love was the goddess Sif.

Despite all these bigger than life characters, Thor's adventures were more often Earth based, for reasons having to do with his origin.

Origin

Dr Donald Blake, while vacationing in Norway, came across an old stick with an odd inscription on it, promising the bearer of the stick "the power of Thor". When banging the stick on the ground, Blake found himself transformed into the form of Thor, God of Thunder, and the stick transformed into the powerful magic weapon, the hammer Mjolnir. Blake used this new power to help others and fight bad guys. At the end of each adventure, Thor would transform himself and the hammer back to mortal form. After a while, it was revealed that Blake actually was Thor, God of Thunder. He was the son of Odin, king of the Norse Gods. In order to teach his son humility, Odin gave his son the mortal form of Donald Blake, and, suppressing in him the memory of who he really was, had him live the life of a humble lame physician. Now, reunited with his powerful hammer, he could return to Asgard by crossing the inter-dimensional Rainbow Bridge. Thor found himself returning to "Midgard" (Earth) again and again. At first Thor thought that this was because he was in love with mortal Nurse Jane Foster, but it was later revealed that Thor's mother was the Earth-mother goddess Gaea, giving him an affinity for the mortal world.
