The Years of Rice and Salt is an alternate history novel by Kim Stanley Robinson. It begins with the premise that the Black Death kills 90% of Europe, instead of just 1/3. As a result, the following thousand years are dominated by Mid-Eastern and Eastern culture, instead of Western culture.

In keeping with the Eastern theme, Robinson maintains continuity in the novel by having his characters reincarnated. Each episode contains characters with the souls of characters from previous episodes, as well as similar personalities.
