SG-1 came across the last of the Tollan evacuees on a routine visit to a new planet. They rescued the small group near the stargate from the volcanic ash raining down on the planet. The Tollan were immediately wary of the S.G.C. and its members considering them to be primitive. Despite their advanced knowledge, they adamantly refused to share technology or information with primitive or less advanced species.
The Tollan are one of the most advanced human civilizations the SGC has encountered. SG-1, Jack O'Neill in particular, has found their arrogance and condescension difficult to bear. Despite this, the Tollan became friends and tentative allies particularly when they SGC came to understand why the Tollan maintain their position on sharing technology.
The Tollan, an advanced and peaceful civilization had a neighboring planet, Serita, on a similar technological level as Earth. They decided to aid the Seritans by offering them technology to produce unlimited energy. The Seritans used the technology to make war on their home planet and destroyed themselves and their planet in a single day. The destruction of Serita shifted Tollan's orbit and The Tollan were forced to evacuate to another planet they renamed Tollana.
On Tollana, they rebuilt their civilization and adopted a rather xenophobic attitude towards other species. They protect their new planet with an array of Ion cannons capable of destroying a Goa'uld ship in orbit. Earth became interested in acquiring the technology but the Tollan refused to share. The technology was also far too advanced to reverse engineer
The arrogance of the Tollan, in some ways, proved their undoing. When their ion cannons proved ineffective on a Go'auld mothership in orbit, they made a deal with the Goa'uld Tanith – who represented Anubis – to produce weapons using Tollan phase-shifting technology to bypass shields. Tanith threatened The Tollan with the elimination of their planet if they did not test their new weapons on Earth. The test would allow them to eliminate Earth and bypass the Asgard Protected Planets Treaty.
Narim, a high ranking Tollan, was convinced by SG-1 that they could not sacrifice the safety of the entire galaxy to save themselves. Narim destroyed all the weapons. In response, Anubis attacked and destroyed Tollana and its Stargate. Some Tollan attempted to flee but were likely wiped out by the Goa'uld.
