The Taking is a 2004 novel by Dean Koontz.
Synopsis
Molly and Neil Sloan awaken in the middle of the night to an unsettling rain that is strangely luminous. They soon learn that their California town is not the only rainy region, In fact, the strange rain is falling all over the planet. Soon an equally strange fog moves in making the streets unfamiliar and all communication with the outside world comes to an end. Molly and Neil join with their neighbors trying to find answers to the strange event. But even when the rain ends, the gloomy misty perpetuates and they discover that something is trying to kill them and it has a purpose.
