The Space Odyssey series is a science fiction novel and film series. The series is a combination of work by author Arthur C. Clarke, and director Stanley Kubrick who worked with Clarke on the first film in the series. The film, 2001: A Space Odyssey was written by Kubrick and Clarke based on Clarke's short story, The Sentinel. The novel of the same name was published shortly after the film's release. The second film 2010: The Year We Make Contact was based on Clarke's 1984 novel, 2010: Odyssey Two and released in 1987. The film was directed by Peter Hyams.
