The Secret of Roan Inish is a 1994 independent family film directed by John Sayles. The film's screenplay, also written by Sayles is based on the book by Rosalie K. Fry. The film is centered around the Irish myth of Selkies, seals able to transform themselves into human form.

Jeni Courtney stars as 10-year-old Fiona, who is sent to live with her grandparents in Donegal, Ireland, near the island of Roan Inish. The island is rumored to be the home of Selkies and it is near the island that her younger brother was swept away by the ocean as an infant, never to be seen again. When Fiona sees a small naked boy on the abandoned island, she begins to wonder if he could be her brother. Her curiosity and imagination are aroused when she hears the legend that one of her ancestors married a Selkie.
