The Sarah Jane Adventures is a spinoff of the long-running British series Doctor Who. The series, which appears to be aimed at children, follows the investigations of intrepid reporter Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), her thirteen year old neighbor, Maria, and and a boy of apparently alien origins that Sarah ends up adopting. Since her encounter with the Doctor in the 2006 Doctor Who story "School Reunion," Sarah has decided that her experience traveling with the Doctor makes her an ideal candidate to combat alien menaces to Earth herself and she has assembled an impressive array of alien gadgets to help her do so, including a version of the Doctor's own sonic screwdriver, some sort of life form scanner and an alien computer known only as "Mr. Smith."
The show premiered in the UK January 1, 2007, with a 60-minute episode titled "Invasion of the Bane." Five two-part stories were broadcast later in the year, with each part being 30 minutes in length. The BBC is considering commissioning an additional 24 half-hour episodes, probably split over two 12 episode seasons.
The SciFi Channel is scheduled to begin airing the series in the US on April 11, 2008.
K-9 (once again played by John Leeson) appeared for a brief cameo in the series premier and also in the season one finale, but did not appear in the remainder of the series due to licensing conflicts with the new K-9 series in development. He is said to be on a special mission which takes him away from Sarah's presence for an unspecified period of time.
