The Rocky Horror Picture Show

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

The Rocky Horror Picture Show opened in the United States on September 29 1975. The show is Horror, sci-fi, and gender-bending kink combined in this musical feature film, which was based on a stage show (The Rocky Horror Show). Although the initial release was an unmitigated flop, the movie went on to thrive in midnight showings, where it was reborn as the most successful cult movie of all time. The cast includes Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick,Meat Loaf, and a young Susan Sarandon.

Rocky Horror fandom rivals that of any other fandom in Sci Fi, with many people having seen the movie literally hundreds of times. Fans dress up as the characters, attend conventions, and write fan fiction.

Why does the film have such a large cult following? Clearly, one element is that the film celebrates individuality and indulging in eccentricity (One catchphrase: "Don't dream it, be it.") Repeated viewings are enhanced by the level of detail, and by a great deal of foreshadowing. The film often doesn't make sense to people the first time they see it (when they are "virgins", in the fanspeak of Rocky Horror). That's because some things only have significance when one has information that follows them. Also, as a midnight show, Rocky Horror is a social event. Everyone can get out of their seats and do the Time Warp together. People talk in line, before the show starts, during the movie, and after. Getting ready to go can also be a group event. There are troops of performers, who have rehearsals and perform in front of the screen.

The film did have a sequel, Shock Treatment, but it has not inspired the same loyalty, despite having several of the same cast and crew.
