Dwayne Douglas Johnson, also known as The Rock (b.May 2, 1972, Hayward, California) is an American wrestler turned actor. Johnson played football in high school and earned a scholarship to the University of Miami. A back injury derailed a potential career in NFL but he later signed on to the Canadian League. He left the league to pursue a career in wrestling. He wrestled under the name Flex Kavanagh and later joined the WWE and became Rocky Maivia and eventually became known as The Rock.
Johnson had occasional guest appearances on TV series such as That 70's Show and The Net before landing his breakthrough role in The Mummy Returns as Mathayus the Scorpion King. The success of the film led to a starring role in the spinoff film, The Scorpion King. With continued big screen success in films like The Rundown, Walking Tall, and Doom, he gave up wrestling to focus on acting and has made regular appearances in genre films.
Among his notable genre roles are Southland Tales, Planet 51, Race to Witch Mountain and Shazam!.
