Plot

While working on Merlin's dimensional shifting technology, Carter is accidentally shifted into an alternate reality when the Carter in that reality activates her own project, a device designed to draw power from alternate universes. Her alternate is killed and Carter is drawn in. In the new reality she finds General George Hammond still in charge of the SGC, Major Evan Lorne is the leader of SG-1, Vala Mal Doran is in prison, Teal'c has rejoined the Jaffa, Colonel Mitchell never joined the SGC and General Hank Landry is president of the United States.

Carter is tasked with saving the planet by completing her alternate's research but unable to do so decides, instead, to work on completing her own work designed to shift the entire planet into another dimension, protecting it from Ori attack. The project requires a massive amount of power which President Landry determines can be supplied by drawing power from the entire US grid. Landry makes the request to an American public who is aware of the Stargate program.

The plan proves successful and carter is hailed as a hero but she soon discovers things about the reality that she dislikes. But her request to work on returning to her own reality are blocked by Landry who determines they need her. Having declared martial law following Anubis' attack, Landry has been in power ever since and has done much to squelch civil liberties. Carter's attempts to encourage the American public to demand their civil rights are blocked and she turns to Dr. Rodney McKay, a businessman and her counterpart's ex husband, for help in returning to her own reality.

McKay is reluctant to help and is ultimately forced to join the SGC program when Landry realizes that Carter will continue to be a problem. McKay helps her return to her own reality where she learns that her teammates have been keeping a constant vigil in her lab believing she was there, simply invisible and unable to communicate. Though annoyed to discover they'd been talking to themselves, Vala makes it clear they missed her very much.
