The NID (National Intelligence Division) is a shadowy U.S. government agency that provides civilian oversight of the Stargate program and Stargate Command (SGC) and its personnel. Despite its origin in legitimate operations, its eventual evolution draws comparisons to the shadow government in The X-Files.
The main goal of the NID is to defend Earth. In their attempt to do so, certain NID members employed rather extreme measures that placed them in conflict with the SGC and eventually led to the reorganization of the agency.
The NID and the SGC had major disagreements on the methods used to acquire the technology needed to defend the planet. This led to the formation of a rogue group within the NID whose goal was to acquire alien technology by any means necessary, employing tactics the SGC considered unethical. While the SGC desired technology, they valued the alliances they made with other races more; a method that proved too slow for the NID but eventually proved far more profitable.

In the episode "Enigma," Colonel Maybourne arrived at the SGC to take custody of Tollan refugees who possessed the technology to walk through solid objects. With the help of Daniel and SG-1, they managed to contact the Nox and the Tollans were saved from exploitation by the NID and went on to become allies of the SGC.
In "Touchstone," a rogue NID group stole a weather control device from the planet Madrona, leaving them subject to devastating climate change. In their attempt to recover the device, SG-1 discovered the NID had been using the second Stargate to acquire technology from other planets. In "Shades of Grey," on the request of the SGC's alien allies, O'Neill goes under cover to break up an off-world NID operation. The NID had stolen technology from the Asgard, Tollan, and other worlds placing the alliances at risk. The team was arrested and jailed. Maybourne, who was partially responsible for the operation, was convicted of treason and sentenced to death.
Two members of that rogue organization were released from prison in "The Sentinel" to fix technology it was believed they damaged on the planet Latona. The Sentinel protected the planet from invasion by the Goa'uld until one of the NID agents killed the Caretaker of the device, rendering it useless until another caretaker took his place. NID Agent, Grieves took the Caretaker's place and gave his life to end the goa'uld invasion.
In the episode "Chain Reaction," The NID blackmailed General George Hammond into retiring by threatening the lives of his granddaughters. To get information on who was behind the threats, Jack O'Neill managed to get Maybourne released from jail and the two discovered Senator Robert Kinsey's involvement in the plot. The information they had against him forced him to reinstate Hammond. Maybourne however, escaped.
The SGC conflicted with the NID several more times before it was finally reorganized. The members of the rogue NID became known as The Trust and continued their activities to acquire alien technologies as much for profit as for planetary defense. The trust has been infiltrated by the goa'uld and their whereabouts are unknown. It is believed they have connections to politics and business on Earth.
