Plot

in 1290 BC, ancient Egyptian priest Imhotep has an affair with the mistress of King Seti I, Anck-su-namun, and the two murder the king when they are discovered. Anck-su-namun then kills herself with the hope her lover can resurrect her. Imhotep makes an attempt, bringing her body to Hamunaptra. They are discovered however, and Imhotep and his priests are mummified alive and cursed with curse of Hom Dai. The curse ensures his immortality and the agony of being buried alive with flesh eating scarabs. The same powers that assure his immortality, however, also ensure that should he be released, death and destruction shall follow.

Three thousand years later, in 1923, an American soldier, Richard O'Connell survived a battle at Hamanuptra only to be imprisoned. In Cairo, librarian and Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan and her brother Jonathan discover a map to Hamanuptra which is shortly destroyed. They soon discover that Rick knows the location and arrange for his freedom. They recruit him for an expedition to the site. Another team of Americans is also on the hunt and both are attacked by a secret society determined to prevent their exploration of Hamanuptra. They survive and the society's fears are soon realized when the American team discovers the book of the dead in a box. Evelyn reads from it, accidentally releasing Imhotep.

Imhotep begins killing the men who opened the box, restoring his form through their organs. He brings down the ten plagues of Egypt on the land and kidnaps Evelyn planning to use her to resurrect Anck-su-namun. Rick and Jonathan manage to rescue Evelyn and stop Imhotep's resurrection plans.
