Mistress of Spices is a 2005 film based on the novel by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and written by Gurinder Chadha and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni who were also responsible for Bend it like Beckham and What's Cooking?. Aishwarya Rai and Dylan McDermott star in the romantic fantasy, which was filmed in London and California. Rai plays an Indian immigrant, Tilo, living in San Francisco and making a living as the owner of a spice shop. As the Mistress of Spices she has the magical ability to see into the lives of her customers, sense their desires, and prescribe the correct spices to solve their problems. She must never leave her store or touch another human, a vow made complicated by her budding passion for a handsome American customer. Doug (Dylan McDermott). Tilo must choose between love and her devotion to her world of spice.
