Synopsis

The morning after a damaging storm a father, David Drayton (Thomas Jane), takes his young son and his neighbor into town to the grocery store for supplies. A mysterious mist rolls in, blocking view of anything outside the store's glass front. With everyone trapped in the store, fear and paranoia builds. The situation only grows more dire when a store clerk is killed and dragged out of the store via the loading dock. Horrible monsters are hiding in the mist. Though many of the people initially refuse to believe David's story, they soon discover the truth for themselves.

Unfortunately, the situation only gives credence and power to religious zealot Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden) who spouts tales of apocalypse and sacrifice. When David and a small group venture out to the nearby pharmacy they discover the situation is more dire than they believe. After violence breaks out in the supermarket, David decides to risk it all to make it to his truck to find help. He and his son and three other survivors witness a world overtaken by giant monsters. Devastated by the state of the world, they decide to take their own lives. Unfortunately, the gun David has only has four bullets. After taking their lives he is desperate to die himself but has no way out. Even more devastating, the mist begins to clear and the Army has moved in to rescue survivors and end the disaster they had a part in creating.
