The Martian Child is a Hugo and Nebula award winning autobiographical novelette written by David Gerrold. It was first published in the (month) 1994 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction.
Plot
The plot mirrors Gerrold's own trials and tribulations as an openly gay man attempting to adopt a troubled ten-year-old boy named Dennis. When Dennis tells David, the lead character, that he is from Mars, he begins to doubt his and his son's grasp on reality.
The story was expanded into a novel in 2002 and served as the basis for Martian Child, the 2007 film, though the issues surrounding the adoptive father's homosexuality were removed in favor of making the protagonist a recently widowed man attempting to rebuild a family.
After The Martian Child
When his adoption was finalized, Dennis changed his name to Sean David Gerrold. He and his father live in Los Angeles.
