The Lost World is the first adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World. Wallace Beery played Professor Challenger, who is mocked by his colleagues for his claims of living dinosaurs deep within the Amazon. Newspaper reporter, Edward Malone learns Challenger's claims are based on a diary given to him by fellow explorer Maple White's daughter, Paula. Malone's newspaper agrees to fund an expedition with Malone, Challenger and adventurer John Roxton to the Amazon to rescue Maple White who has become stranded on a plateau. The group finds the plateau and return to England with proof of their fantastic claims.

The special effects, by Willis O'Brien (who would later do King Kong) were unprecedented. Doyle showed a test reel to the Society of American Magicians, without explanation. The New York Times ran a story on it, uncertain if the movies were of real dinosaurs, ectoplasmic entities, or fakes.
