The Left Hand of Darkness is a 1969 novel by Ursula K. Le Guin. The novel is the first in Le Guin's Hainish Cycle series and is considered to be one of the first works of feminist science fiction. In the novel, Earth ambassador, Genly Ai is sent to the planet Gethen where the androgynous natives have no fixed sexual identity. He becomes involved with a native, Estraven, and begins to gain an understanding of what it means to be a Gethenian.
