Summary
A team of experts led by Ed Pollack(Ron Perlman) has been sent into the arctic regions of the Northern Alaska Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to prep a site for oil drilling. The area has never been drilled before and the move to do so deeply concerns environmentalists. The prep team, second-in -command Abby Sellers, (Connie Britton), new recruit, Max McKinder(Zach Gilford), mechanic Motor (Kevin Corrigan) and two Native Americans, Lee Means (Pato Hoffman) and Dawn Russel (Joanne Shenandoah), also have mixed feelings about the task ahead. Max goes missing on a trip to the bathroom, and later returns different, terrified. He claims to have seen things in the snow. When he is later found dead, frozen to death with his eyes pecked out, the others become increasingly disoriented and fall victim to fear as their minds and bodies betray them.
Environmental scientists, James Hoffman (James LeGros) and assistant Elliott Jenkins (Jaime Harrold) discover that the permafrost is melting at an alarming rate and the weather is unpredictable making it dangerous to continue their work. Their chiding proves a nuisance to Ed. The melting has caused something ancient and powerful to be released from deep inside the Earth contributing to the terror the team experiences.
