The Invisible stars Justin Chatwin as cool-headed high school student Nick Powell. Frustrated with his mother's emotional disconnect after the death of his father, Nick plans to leave home for England immediately after graduation without informing his mother, Diane (Marcia Gay Harden). When Diane discovers Nick's plans, he abandons his dream.
At school, Nick runs afoul of juvenile delinquent Annie Newton (Margarita Levieva) whose forays into crime have grown increasingly dangerous. After defying her boyfriend and cohort, parolee Marcus Bohem (Alex O'Loughlin) and committing a risky jewelry robbery, Marcus turns her in anonymously.
Annie suspects Nick's best friend, Pete (Chris Marquette), who owed her money, for ratting her out, but when she and friends beat him up, he informs her Nick is responsible, believing Nick has already left for England. Annie finds Nick walking home and jumps him, beating him to death, or so she believes. She and friends dump the body in a drain in the woods.
When Nick doesn't show up at home or school, a search party is sent out to find him with no luck. Detectives Brian Larson (Callum Keith Rennie) and Kate Tunney (Michelle Harrison) believe Annie knows something but cannot compel her to reveal it. Nick awakens and returns to home and school but soon realizes no one can see or hear him. He follows Annie trying to find some way to break through to her. An incident with a dying bird leads him to realize he may not actually be dead but he is unable to find his own body and he knows he is running out of time.
With repeated efforts he realizes Annie is able to hear him. Annie discovers that it was Marcus who turned her in and as guilt eats away at her. Her conscience guides her to help Nick. But her task is not complete with guiding authorities to his body. She must risk her own life to bring him back to the world of the living.
