The Humanoids is a novel by Jack Williamson. Originally published in "....And Searching Minds", in 1948, it was later published as a novel in 1949.
Summary
Set in the distant future, when humanity has become a technologically advanced civilization occupying many worlds, the novel begins on planet Wing IV where scientist Warren Mansfield hopes to counteract the dangers of technology by creating self replicating robots to serve, obey and guard men from harm. The robots, known as "The Humanoids", spread throughout the planets taking their prime directive literally, relieving humans of all dangerous activity including weapons research. To fulfill their goal of keeping mankind happy, unhappy individuals are drugged. Dr. Clay Forester is warned by teleporter, Jane Carter of robots coming to their homeworld and he and a group of psychically gifted humans plan to rebel and reprogram the Robots' central humanoid brain with a different prime directive.

It's usually best to give a very general overview to a story first, then plot details. When including the plot or essential details in your article (which could ruin the pleasure of discovery for some readers), it is important to include the spoiler tag before any give-away material.
