The Handmaid's Tale is a science fiction novel written by Margaret Atwood. The novel inspired a 1990 film of the same name starring Natasha Richardson and Faye Dunaway.

The plot of the novel includes a near future United States ruled by a an ultra right-wing religious government. Also an affliction strikes humanity where only a small percentage of the female population is fertile.
