The Giver is a 1993 science fiction novel by Lois Lowry. The Giver won the 1994 Newbery Medal. The novel is set in what appears to be a Utopian society that has eliminated pain and strife, and incidentally, emotional depth, by converting to "Sameness". The story centers on a young boy, Jonas, who is selected to receive the memories of the time before society converted to sameness. These memories are passed on to help their society make decisions that the conversion to "sameness" may have eliminated the experience required to make. When the memories are transferred by the "giver", he discovers that their society is incredibly shallow.

It's usually best to give a very general overview to a story first, then plot details. When including the plot or essential details in your article (which could ruin the pleasure of discovery for some readers), it is important to include the spoiler tag before any give-away material.
