The Fly (opera)

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

The Fly is an opera based on the the 1986 David Cronenberg horror feature The Fly which was, in turn, based on a short story by George Langelaan. The opera, which opened at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on July 2, 2008, features a score by composer Howard Shore who also wrote the music for the film. Famed tenor Placido Domingo serves as conductor and he opera is directed by Cronenberg.

The basic plot of the opera is the same as the film in which Reporter Veronica Quaife (Ruxandra Donose) falls in love with scientist, Seth Brundle (Daniel Okulitch). Brundle invites her to his home to witness his creation, a machine that can teleport a person from one place to another. While the machine performs as intended, an accident involving a housefly occurs, causing Brundle to merge with the insect and be transformed into a gruesome creature. Unlike the film however, the movie is set in the 1950s.

The opera makes its American debut in Los Angeles on September 7, 2008
